:Leonardo Pagnotta is Full Professor in Machine Design and Experimental Mechanics at University of Calabria (UNICAL). He was: head of the Department of Mechanical, Energy and Management Engineering; member of university’s Academic Senate; Chair of the PhD Program of Mechanical Engineering and Chair of the of the Council of the Unified Mechanical Engineering Courses (Bachelor’s and Master’s degree) of the University of Calabria. He graduated in Industrial Technology Engineering, mechanical specialization, in 1984 at the University of Calabria and he received his PhD in Mechanics of Materials from the University of Pisa in 1990. Currently, he is the head of both the Laboratories of Mechanical Engineering and the Laboratory of Mechanical Characterization of Materials of UNICAL. He is Professor of “Mechanical Engineering Design with Polymers, Ceramics and Composites” and “Engineering Materials Selection” for the Master’s degree course in Mechanical Engineering at University of Calabria. His research activities have been addressed to numerical methodologies for stress analysis, reliability design and structural optimization, and methods of experimental mechanics applied to residual stress measurement, elastic properties measurement of isotropic and anisotropic material, fracture mechanics, and non-destructive testing. He has also worked in the field of characterization of ceramic thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) and metallic coatings, has dealt with mechanical characterization of materials at micro- and nano-scale and, investigated the effects of squeeze film damping on MEMS-based structures. Recently, he has studied nanostructured coatings, graphene-based composite materials, SMART materials and materials beyond graphene. Some ongoing activities concern the development, characterization and application of composite materials for artificial muscles and, the study of the failure mechanics of 3D printed polymeric parts by X-ray microtomography.

Summary of Research Activities Leonardo Pagnotta’s research has focused on developing numerical methodologies for stress analysis, the design and reliability of ceramic components, and the structural optimization of mechanical components, including those made of composite materials. Additionally, his work has encompassed the development and application of innovative experimental mechanics techniques, including strain gauge analysis, holographic and speckle interferometry, integrated photoelasticity, digital image correlation, nanoindentation, and tribology. His research applications have included residual stress measurement in metals and optical fibers, determination of elastic properties of isotropic and anisotropic materials, fracture mechanics, and non-destructive testing for material diagnostics. Furthermore, he has developed numerical-experimental methodologies for the elastic characterization of anisotropic materials using vibrational and interferometric techniques. He has worked extensively on the characterization of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) and metallic coatings, mechanical characterization of materials at micro- and nanoscale, and studied the effects of damping phenomena in MEMS technology. His interests also extend to mechanical design, particularly reliability-based design, conceptual design, biomedical devices, and the structural optimization of critical components for industrial applications. These studies have been applied to advanced materials, such as ceramics, composites, and nanostructured materials, including coatings. During his career, he has explored innovative topics such as the piezoelectric and piezoresistive characterization of geopolymers, flexible electronics materials, the effects of additive manufacturing on polymer and metal part production, and packaging materials. More recently, his research has addressed fluid dynamic effects in hydrogen transport pipelines, hydrogen storage systems, fuel cells, and the design of hydrogen-powered trains, with the goal of exploring innovative solutions for energy sustainability and hydrogen-based transportation systems. Responsibilities and Participation in Third-Party Research Agreements Leonardo Pagnotta has served as the Principal Investigator for research agreements/contracts with organizations such as ENEL, AEROprogetti, and IRPE. Additionally, he has contributed to research activities and coordination with companies like ALENIA, BREDA, and FOS. In 2022, the Department of Mechanical, Energy, and Management Engineering (DIMEG), directed by Prof. Pagnotta from 2015 to 2021, was ranked among the top 350 departments of Italian state universities (Departments of Excellence, Law 232/2016) following the results of the 2015–2019 VQR evaluation. It ranked first among UNICAL departments and was included among the 58 departments admitted to the first phase of the funding competition. In 2017, the ING-IND/14 research group at UNICAL, to which he belongs, was ranked first nationally among research groups involved in the 2011–2014 VQR evaluation. In 2013, the ING-IND/14 research group at UNICAL was also ranked first nationally among research groups involved in the 2004–2010 VQR evaluation.
