-- Research Activity
Prof. Di Renzo has been involved in the development of a FORTRAN90 computational code for the detailed simulation of fluidized bed hydrodynamics. In recent years, code modules have been integrated into the code MFIX-DEM developed at the NETL (USA). The computational tools, elaborated in collaboration with Prof. F.P. Di Maio, represents the state-of-the-art of simulation methods to study multiphase processes such as fluidized beds in extreme detail. The modelling approach is based upon the Discrete Element Method (DEM) for the simulation of the solid phase coupled to a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) algorithm for the solution of the fluid phase flow field. As confirmed in the list of publications, a significant development of the methodology has been possible thanks to the work of Prof. Di Renzo. The DEM-CFD technique has been applied successfully in the analysis of multi-component fluidized beds, in the study of the transition from homogeneous to bubbling behaviour and in the description of the flow field around immersed objects. Other research activities dealt with modelling and optimization of membrane-based operations like simultaneous reaction-separation for gas-phase systems in staged configurations, mixed matrix membranes for gas separations and emulsification processes.
