ADR graduated in 2000 and earned the PhD (2005) in Chemical Engineering. He is currently involved as Associate Professor in teaching courses and modules within the Chemical Engineering master degree at Unical. Research interests involve the development and application of advanced modelling tools for industrial particulate solids processing, especially in multiphase systems. Together with F.P. Di Maio, in the last two decades he contributed to the development of Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulation codes that are employed in today's commercial solutions. Research applications are very broad, spanning processes in the chemical and petrochemical industry, pharmaceutics, materials for the construction industry and energy conversion technologies.

ADR is involved in different projects funded by public institutions (regional, national and international) and private companies (through research contracts). He regularly participates in international conferences of interest. He was invited to give seminars in Italy and abroad (UK, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands). Apart from publishing numerous journal articles for a total of over 100 contributions, he is now member of the Editorial board of impactful international journals (Elsevier, MDPI, FrontiersIn).

Alberto Di Renzo is Associate Professor in Modelling of Chemical Processes as of July 1, 2020 at the University of Calabria, DIMES Department (with Qualification for Full Professorship).

Research activities. The research interests are mainly focussed on the application of advanced computational techniques and detailed modeling to the study of hydrodynamics and transport phenomena in multi-phase reactors and process units.

Publications and bibliometric indicators Author or co-authors of >100 scientific contributions, 57 of which indexed on the Scopus or Web of Science databases, 41 of which in prestigious international journals. Co-author also of 60 contributions to mostly international conferences. Total number of citation received: >2000, with an h-index: 18. (www.scopus.com as of 31 Dec. 2023)

Since 2002, he participated as speaker in more than 30 international conferences, often with some management or organization role.

He is involved, often as PI, in several research projects, including national (PRIN, PNRR, PON) and international projects (COST Action ON-DEM CA22132, EU), as well as in collaboration with private companies. He also serves as external expert in international projects, at EU level and in UK.

He serves in the Editorial boards of: Chemical Engineering Research and Design (Elsevier), Processes (MDPI), Powders (MDPI), Frontiers in Chemical Engineering. Serves as Reviewer for several major journals, such as: Chemical Engineering Science, Chemical Engineering Journal, AIChE Journal, I&ECR, Powder Technology, Advanced Powder Technology.

He lectures in Dynamics and Control of Chemical Processes and Optimization and Advanced Simulation of chemical Processes (both in Master in Chem. Eng.). Tutor in courses on Computational Modelling of Chemical Processes. He has supervised over 30 first level and master level students and six PhD students (2 in progress).

Graduated cum laude in Chemical Engineering at the University of Calabria. -- Research Activity Prof. Di Renzo has been involved in the development of a FORTRAN90 computational code for the detailed simulation of fluidized bed hydrodynamics. In recent years, code modules have been integrated into the code MFIX-DEM developed at the NETL (USA). The computational tools, elaborated in collaboration with Prof. F.P. Di Maio, represents the state-of-the-art of simulation methods to study multiphase processes such as fluidized beds in extreme detail. The modelling approach is based upon the Discrete Element Method (DEM) for the simulation of the solid phase coupled to a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) algorithm for the solution of the fluid phase flow field. As confirmed in the list of publications, a significant development of the methodology has been possible thanks to the work of Prof. Di Renzo. The DEM-CFD technique has been applied successfully in the analysis of multi-component fluidized beds, in the study of the transition from homogeneous to bubbling behaviour and in the description of the flow field around immersed objects.
