Alfredo Garro is an Associate Professor of Computing Systems at the Department of Informatics, Modeling, Electronics and Systems Engineering (DIMES) of the University of Calabria (Italy). In 2016 he was Visiting Professor at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston (TX, USA), working with the Software, Robotics, and Simulation division (ER). He received the Laurea degree in Computer Engineering and the Ph.D. degree in Systems and Computer Engineering from the University of Calabria, in 2000 and 2005, respectively. From 1999 to 2001, he has been a researcher at CSELT, the Telecom Italia Group R&D Lab. From 2001 to 2003, he collaborates with the Institute of High Performance Computing and Networking of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). From January 2005 to December 2011, he has been an Assistant Professor of Computing Systems at the DIMES Department (formerly DEIS) of the University of Calabria. His main research interests include: systems and software engineering, reliability engineering, modeling and simulation. His list of publications contains about 100 papers published in international journals, books and proceedings of international and national conferences. In 2014 he has been elected member of the M&S Speciality Topics (SPEC) PRP of SISO. In 2015 he has been elected vice chair of the Space Reference Federation Object Model (SRFOM) Product Development Group (PDG) of SISO. In 2017 he has been elected Vice President/next President of the “Chapter Italia” of INCOSE (International Council on Systems Engineering) and of the related Associazione Italiana di Systems Engineering (AISE) where he served from 2015 to 2017 as Technical Director. Alfredo Garro is a member of: IEEE and IEEE Computer Society(from 2005), IEEE Reliability Society, IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society, INCOSE, and SISO.

Alfredo Garro is President of the Italian Association of Systems Engineering (AISE) - INCOSE Chapter "Italia". Alfredo Garro received the Laurea Degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Calabria on May 2000, and on February 2005 he received the PhD Degree in Systems and Computer Engineering from the same institution. From 1999 to 2001, he has been a researcher at CSELT, the Telecom Italia Group R&D Lab. From 2001 to 2003, he collaborates with the Institute of High Performance Computing and Networking of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). From January 2005 to December 2011, he has been an Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering at the DIMES Department (formerly DEIS) of the University of Calabria. #Research Activity Description and Bibliometric indices The research activity of Alfredo Garro has been mainly focused on the following research areas: Agent-Oriented Software Engineering (AOSE), Modeling and Simulation for System Dependability Analysis, Distributed Simulation, Theoretical Computer Science and Mathematics. The research activity of Alfredo Garro is documented by about 100 papers published in international journals, books and proceedings of international and national conferences. Most of the publications result from joint research activities with several national and international research groups and institutions. Bibliometric indices available on SCOPUS (Author ID: 7005861198, https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=7005861198) are the following: • Documents:117; • Citations:1315 by 830 documents; • h-index: 21; • Co-authors:152. The paper Single-tape and multi-tape Turing machines through the lens of the Grossone methodology (Sergeyev, Y.D., Garro, A.) has been included by the Thomson Reuters Web of Science service as ‘Hot paper’ in January/February 2015. #Ability to engage and train young researchers By focusing on the latest four years of activity, Alfredo Garro has been supervisor of the following Ph.D. students at DIMES: • Andrea Tundis, Ph.D. in “Systems and Computer Engineering”(XXVI cycle), Ph.D. Thesis: “Model-based and Simulation-driven Methods for the Reliability and Safety Analysis of Systems”; • Alberto Falcone, Ph.D. in “Information and Communication Engineering for Pervasive Intelligent Environments”(XXIX cycle), Ph.D. program: “Distribution, reuse and interoperability between simulation models in heterogeneous distributed computing environments”. He has been advisor of the following two Research Grants: • Title: “Study and definition of methods and techniques for the management and analysis of data”; Research Project: SINSE – Sistema di supporto alle decisioni in ambito Socioeconomico, POR FESR CALABRIA 2007-2013; Grant period: March 2014 - July 2015. • Title “Study, design and testing of models and techniques for the analysis and management of the IT risk”; Project: Protection of Digital Services and Electronic Payment, PON R&C 2007-2013; Grant period: August 2015 - July 2016. In 2014 he was co-founder of the Departmental Research Laboratory “System Modeling And Simulation Hub Lab (SMASH Lab)” that involves 3 unit of permanent department staff among researchers and professors. # Degree of success in previous Italian or international projects The research activity of Alfredo Garro has been carried out for the most part in the context of national (PRIN, PON, FAR), regional (POR) and international (IST, ITEA) research projects. In the following the main research projects in which he has been involved are reported by limiting the list to the period 2012-2015. • From Feb. 2014 he participates in the PRIN Project “Disasters and Emergencies Management for Safety and Security in industrial Plants” funded by MIUR(36 months). • From July 2013 he participates in the Cyber Security Technological District in the context of the Project "Protection of Digital Services and Electronic Payment"(36 months),PON R&C 2007-2013. • From May 2013 to Dec. 2014 he participated in the PIA Project “SINSE – Sistema di supporto alle decisioni in ambito Socioeconomico”, POR FESR CALABRIA 2007-2013. • From Nov. 2012 to June 2015 he participated in the DICET – INMOTO – Organization of Cultural Heritage for Smart Tourism and REal – Time Accessibility (OR.C.HE.S.T.R.A.) project(36 months), PON R&C 2007-2013. • From Sep. 2012 he is member of the Executive Committee and National Coordinator for Italy in the MODRIO (Model Driven Physical Systems Operation) European Project, ITEA 2 Call 6. • From Jan. 2012 to June 2015 he participated in the SILA – Sistema Integrato di Laboratori per l'Ambiente project(36 months), PON R&C 2007-2013. • From Jan. 2012 to June 2014 he participated in the Integrated Regional Strategic Project: “Rete dei poli di Innovazione Regionale”(42 months), POR FESR Calabria 2007-2013. • In 2012 he coordinated the research project, funded by the University of Calabria, "Models and Methods for the Reliability Analysis of Systems". • From Jan. 2011 to June 2013 he was scientific coordinator of the research activity OR6.R2 – “Methods and models to support the design of services based on TETRA Smart Object with safety, privacy and reliability requirements” in the context of the “TETRis – Servizi innovativi Open Source su TETRA” project(36 months) – PON R&C 2007-2013. • From 2013 he is Technical Contact Point for the DIMES Department in the Open Source Modelica Consortium (OSMC). #Awards and other recognitions By limiting the list to period 2012-2015: • In 2014 he received the “Simulation Education Award for Outstanding Educational Action in Modeling & Simulation” from the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC). • In the Simulation Exploration Experience(SEE) project coordinated by NASA, the Team of the University of Calabria, of which Alfredo Garro was Faculty Advisor, received the following awards: (i) “Awards for Outstanding achievement in Distributed Teamwork, Collaboration, and Interactivity” (2014); (ii) “Excellence In Technology Application & Engineering Design Award” (2015); (ii) “Audience & Judges ‘Wow’ Award” (2015). • In 2013, he has been elected member of the SPACE Forum Planning and Review Panel (PRP) of the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO). • In 2014 he has been elected member of the M&S Speciality Topics (SPEC) PRP of SISO. • In 2015 he has been elected vice chair of the Space Reference Federation Object Model (SRFOM) Product Development Group (PDG) of SISO. • In 2015 he has been elected Technical Director of the “Chapter Italia” of INCOSE (International Council on Systems Engineering) and of the related Associazione Italiana di Systems Engineering (AISE). On the basis of the results achieved in the context of the SEE project, Alfredo Garro was invited to spend a period of nine months (from January to October 2016) at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston(TX, USA) as a visiting professor, with Alberto Falcone, a Ph.D. student he supervises, as a visiting researcher. # Memberships in Editorial Boards and Program Committees By limiting the list to the period 2012-2015: • In 2014 Alfredo Garro has been among the founder and organizer of the first conference on Systems Engineering of the INCOSE Italia Chapter (CIISE 2014) and of the Special Session “Research at INCOSE Italy” in the context of the 1st IEEE International Symposium on Systems Engineering. • From 2013 to 2015, he was Regional Editor of the SCS M&S Magazine of SCS (Society for Modeling & Simulation International). • In 2014 he was Guest Editor of the Special Issue on “Integrated approaches based on advanced Modelling and Simulation methodologies for Industry and Manufacturing” of the Int.
