BIO SKETCH
Sergio Flesca is Full Professor at the University of Calabria from 2017. He took his PhD in “Ingegneria dei Sistemi ed Informatica” with a thesis entitled “Query Languages for Graph-like Databases” at the University of Calabria. He is author of more than 110 scientific papers and of a patent. His Scopus H-Index is 18 over 1537 citations, while his Google Scholar H-index is 26 over 3276 citations. His current research interests are focused on theory and applications of computational argumentation, Process Mining, Databases. He has been active in several national and international research projects and is regularly invited in program committees of international conferences and to review for top-quality scientific journals.
He has taught courses on various topics of Computer Engineering at Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. level and has given lectures in doctoral courses at international level. He has supervised several Bachelor and Master theses and supervised 4 Ph.D. theses.
He has regularly assumed administrative responsibilities concerning educational planning and management at the University of Calabria, where he is currently serving ad member of the board of directors.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Sergio Flesca is active since 1997 in both basic and applied research in the area of databases, web and artificial intelligence.
As to basic/applied research, he has provided contributions in the following areas/topics:
• Databases and World Wide Web.
• Active and Deductive databases integration
• Rewriting queries using views
• XML Data management
• Information extraction
• Inconsistent data management
• Approximate query answering
• Abstract argumentation
• Process mining and Log analysis
• Storing and querying RFID data
• Collaborative computational models
These activities generated 37 journal papers, 4 book chapters, 78 conference and workshop papers, a monography, and a patent.
Publication venues include top quality journals (like IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, Journal Of Computer And System Sciences, Information and Computation, Journal of the ACM, Artificial Intelligence, Information Systems) and conferences (like ACM-PODS, VLDB, EDBT, ICALP, IJCAI, ECAI.
Sergio Flesca has been active in scientific organization initiatives. He was member of the program committee member of several conferences including VLDB, CIKM, WWW, IJCAI. He was general chair of the 22nd International Database Engineering & Applications Symposium - IDEAS 2018.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
• He is member of the PhD committee in Information and Communication Technologies at the Departement of “Ingegneria Informatica, Modellistica, Elettronica e Sistemistica” (DIMES) of the University of Calabria.
• He is member of the board of directors of the University of Calabria.
• From February 2017 till January 2020 he was coordinator of the Bachelor and Master degree in Computer Engineering at University of Calabria
• From 2006 till 2014 he was member of the board of directors of the University spin-off ITACA s.r.l.
• He acted as delegate for Information and Communication Technology and delegate for the relationship with CINCA of the Rector of the university of Calabria.
• From 2104 till 2016 he was member of the Technical and Scientific Committee of the ICT Center of University of Calabria.
• He is scientific coordinator of the “Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Lab" of DIMES
• He was scientific coordinator of the research unit of University of Calabria for the following research projects:
o Project PIA Regione Calabria entitled “Utilizzo di tecniche avanzate per l'estrazione, la correlazione e la presentazione di informazioni relative alle imprese", PIA A02/1377/P45158-13;

SUPERVISION AND MENTORING
Promoting the development of excellence in students and introducing junior colleagues to research have always been a priority in the activity of Sergio Flesca, with particular attention to Master theses and to mentoring of PhD students.
As to introduction of junior colleagues to research, Sergio Flesca has, in particular, supervised or co-supervised the following Ph.D. students:
- Tagarelli Andrea, (PhD - XVII cycle), now he is associate professor of computer engineering at University of Calabria;
- Parisi Francesco, (PhD - XIX cycle), now he is associate professor of computer engineering at University of Calabria;
- Fazzinga Bettina, (PhD - XX cycle), now she is researcher at ICAR-CNR;
- Antonio Bevacqua, (PhD - XXV cycle), now he works in a company.
