Paolo Trunfio is a professor of computer engineering at the Department of Computer Engineering, Modeling, Electronics, and Systems (DIMES) at the University of Calabria. He is serving as an Associate Editor of "ACM Computing Surveys" and "Journal of Big Data," as well as a member of the Editorial Board of several scientific journals, including "Future Generation Computer Systems", the "International Journal of Web Information Systems", the "International Journal of Parallel, Emergent and Distributed Systems" and "Big Data and Cognitive Computing". 

His research activities are primarily focused on data analysis systems, machine learning systems, parallel and distributed computing, grid, cloud, and mobile systems, and programming models for high-performance computing (HPC) systems. He has published over 150 scientific papers and co-authored three books: "Programming Big Data applications" (World Scientific, 2024), "Data analysis in the Cloud" (Elsevier, 2015), and "Service-oriented distributed knowledge discovery" (Chapman & Hall/CRC, 2012).

He has participated in various European projects (the FP6-IST "CoreGRID" project, the H2020 projects "ASPIDE" and "eFlows4HPC," the COST projects "IC0804" and "IC1305," the CEF project "GOVeIn") and national projects (among others, the PNRR projects "National HPC Center," "Agritech," "FAIR," and "Tech4You," the FIRB project "TOCAI.it," and the PON projects "OpenKnowTech," "TETRis," and "INMOTO") funded on a competitive basis. 

He is a founding member of DtoK Lab Srl, an academic spin-off of the University of Calabria, based in Rende (CS), which specializes in the design and development of new software tools, methods, and applications for the analysis of large amounts of data on Cloud infrastructures. He was the managing director of the company from 2014 to 2021.
