(1988-92) As part of MURST 40% projects aimed at the development of methods and models for the analysis and optimization of production systems, development of hierarchical queue network models and relative analytical solution with fixed point methods [C2, C3, C4, C5]. In particular, he proposed a fixed point technique for the solution of job-shop queue systems [D1, A4]. In collaboration with the “Galileo Ferraris” National Electrotechnical Institute of Turin, experimentation of state aggregation methods of Markov chains and solution of generalized stochastic Petri nets. Models of "just in time" production lines [C1]. Development of mathematical programming models for load balancing and simulation of load allocation policies for distributed processing systems [A2, E4].
Experimentation of approximate methods based on fixed point schemes for the solution of closed queue network models, with multiclass user population and with stations equipped with multiple servers [E7, E8]. Analysis and experimentation of heuristic methods based on techniques greedy combined with memoryless local search algorithms. Efficient solution of NP-Hard periodic vehicle routing problems in freight transport logistics [D3].
(1996) Experimentation of decomposition methods for closed queue network and multiclass models. Approximate calculation of performance and reliability indexes of the resources of a job-shop system. Development of an application in the FMS field [D2]. Development of "lotsize" models for production planning, with applications to the chemical industry (UOP MS SpA of San Leo, RC). Laporte (Canada Research Chair in Distribution Management, HEC Montréal) on efficient algorithms for the solution of real instances based on the meta-heuristic of tabu search. Experimentation of branch & bound algorithms and extension of the heuristic approach of the allocation of ships to mooring points in the continuum [C6, A8].
(2003-2004) Formulation of an IP model for the localization of traffic meters on the urban road network, aimed at updating the OD matrix. Development of a test network and stochastic demand assignment methods. Exact resolution of small instances and comparisons with an established location model [B4]. Deepening of methods based on Lagrangian relaxation for the calculation of bounds. Start of a collaboration with prof. Musmanno and Prof. Ghiani (Lecce) aimed at the application of stochastic simulation to the development of methods and algorithms for the (discrete) optimization of logistics models. Framing of the open problems in the field of Simulation based Optimization (S&O) both in methodological and computational terms, for the development of procedures also on parallel computing environments [A7].Formulation of an IP model for the optimal configuration (queuing servers) of a network of queues aimed at representing a general problem of logistics of industrial production, where the objective function must be evaluated with simulation experiments. Development of an Optimization procedure by Simulation, based on simulated annealing and on statistical comparisons (between configurations) based on classical methods [A10]. Study of methods of analysis of the output of discrete event simulation in S&O, aimed at achieving a greater probability of making a correct selection and above all for greater efficiency in real applications. Experimentation of alternative methods of aggregation of the direct results of the simulation, to support the estimation techniques of the mean and variance of the simulated process [D7]. Adaptation of an S&O model to the problem of optimal equipping of mooring points in port logistics problems. Specialization and implementation of an S&O procedure in parallel computing environments, in particular based on grids, for speed up evaluation [A9].
(2005-2007) Methods and models of optimization by simulation, with application to port logistics problems. Development and simulation of a queue network model for the organization of accesses to the port of Gioia Tauro and the assignment of mooring slots, within a Law 297 project, in collaboration with MCT SpA. Development of a model for managing quayside cranes and simulating loading and unloading operations [D8, A11, E17] for evaluating crane-hold assignments and calculating makespan. Application of optimization through simulation to the problems of organization and management of call centers. Development of a simulator for the problem of optimal composition (skill based) of the staff of agents per shift and the problem of assigning incoming calls. Study of probabilistic models for the characterization of arrivals and services [D9]. method development,
(2008-2010) Specialization of languages and architectures for software platforms aimed at the development of S&O models to support logistics. Experimentation of open source environments, insights on generation problems and exploration of the feasible region in basic problems of resource allocation and activity sequencing [C11, C12, C14]. IP models and algorithms for the organization and management of loading/unloading of containers in a maritime terminal, with particular reference to the problems of crane deployment and crane assignment [C15] and to the opportunity of a unifying integrated formulation, supported by an efficient solution methodology, based on local branching techniques [D13 ]. In-depth study of integration issues with previous discrete simulation applications aimed at generating the weekly berth plan. Development of Ranking & Selection methods for the choice of the optimal system configuration in the case of alternative solutions known a priori and their application to organization problems of the container storage yard in a maritime terminal [A12]. Meta-heuristics and Ranking & Selection techniques for the case of solutions revealed at run time in S&O procedures, with application to the crane scheduling problem [C13, C16].Development of a simulated annealing algorithm for the crane scheduling problem [ D12]. Analysis and numerical comparison with balanced explorative & exploitative search procedures; experimentation of a stopping condition based on the long-term behavior of the Markov chain underlying the research process and proposition of a IP model for the computation of a lower bound [A13]. Development of discrete mathematical programming models, in a deterministic environment , and of heuristic algorithms for the basic processes of accumulation, consolidation and return of goods, typical of rear-port logistics, referring to specializations of the VMI paradigm [D11, D16]. Study of nested partitions methods for the development of efficient algorithms for the crane scheduling problem formulated in a deterministic context [C17]. Investigation on rectangular packing models and local branching algorithms for the weekly plan construction problem in the deterministic field [D15, D20]. Calibration and validation in a real environment of simulators of the main logistic processes of port logistics and of some fundamental support processes for transshipment on intercontinental routes [D18, D19].
(2011-2013) Development and testing of a new branch & bound algorithm for crane scheduling based on innovative branching and bounds construction techniques [A14]. Specialization of the local branching technique to the previous algorithm [A16]. Development of a queuing model for the quantitative analysis of security policies in container management [C20] and of the organization of internal transfers in a maritime terminal; definition of optimization policies by means of simulation [C19]. Implementation and validation of a simulator of the integrated operations of container transfer from quay to yard and vice versa [D15, C21]. Simulation and statistical analysis of container handling and reshuffling data [C23], heuristics for housekeeping operations and definition of sequential ranking & selection techniques, based on the idea of analyzing the variation mode of the simulated process and observations variance simulation output [C18]. Integration and validation of algorithms in a simulation tool developed for subsequent technological transfer to the MCT SpA of Gioia Tauro [A15].Study of methodologies for modeling the problem of berth allocation under conditions of uncertainty on the duration of loading and unloading operations and of container ship arrivals at a transshipment hub. Integration of an IP formulation solved with a Beam Search algorithm and optimized by Event Simulation with a search algorithm based on Simulated Annealing [C22, A17].
(2014-2017) Integration of a queuing model in a simulation optimization tool [A18] based on a vehicle scheduling model for housekeeping operations in maritime container terminal logistics. Proposal of an event-based methodology, in a stochastic environment, for the reproduction of the internal route choice model in container transfer operations entrusted to vehicles driven by human operators [D19, C27, A20, C30]. Review of approximate methods for the analytical resolution of queuing network models aimed at supporting simulation methodologies in the evaluation of container handling and internal transfer processes in a maritime terminal [D18, D20, C25]. Proposal of a new approximate method for the analytical resolution of queuing networks with multiclass population, multiple-server stations and FCFS discipline [D21, C29]. Diversification of application topics of integer programming and optimization by simulation to Cyber Security problems, with reference to the Poste Italiane operator. Proposal of a method and development of a tool for the optimal management of cooperating agents in risk limitation operations, intrusion contrast and asset damage mitigation [C24, A19, C28]. Diversification of simulation issues and statistical problem analysis evaluation of administrative processes and performance analysis in the presence of determining human factors. Development and validation of a simulation model with reference to the purchasing process in a department of the University of Calabria [C26].
(2018-2020) Development of approximations for port logistics decision models based on queuing network models [A21] and study of the case of Markov models of closed networks solved with the Mean Value Analysis algorithm . For the latter, a pseudo-polynomial approximation has been proposed and extensively tested [C31] to reduce the computational complexity, which is exponential in the number of different and multiple classes of users. A contribution to the methodologies of Optimization by Simulation has been started in same period and applied to the organization and mathematical planning of health resources for assistance to the elderly in the area [C32] and [A22].
(2021-2023) Proposal of an "informed simulation" paradigm for decision support in a maritime logistics platform and development of a framework based on the integration of intelligent metaheuristics in event simulation for the problem of finding internal container cargo handling routes [A24]. Review, adaptation and testing of approximate methods for solving queue network models, starting from the Mean Value Analysis algorithm [A23] and [C35], intended to absorb the output of low-level stochastic simulation in a hierarchical way. Complete review and critical analysis of the most recent methods of Operations Research on which to base the development of an algorithm for optimizing storage positions in a Ce.Di. real in the process of physical preparation and organizational configuration [C33]. Definition of a paradigm based on "event-graphs" and of a stochastic simulation model for the quantitative evaluation of the performance of the logistic process of manual "order picking" [C34].
