He obtained a master’s degree in Geology (2011) and Ph.D. in Earth Science (Geochemistry and Geothermal resources) (2015) at the University of Calabria. His experience is mainly aimed to the management, characterization, and sustainable development of natural waters and low-medium enthalpy geothermal resources using innovative techniques and software such as EQ3/6 and PhreeqC for the geochemical modeling of aqueous, solid, and gas systems. In the last years, he has started partnerships with Italian and foreign research centers including the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-Frankfurt), the National Center for Scientific Research ''Demokritos'' (Athens), the Institute for the Dynamics of Environmental Processes (CNR-IDPA) and the Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
In particular, his research interests include:
- Origin and evolution of fluids in geothermal areas.
- Geochemistry of stable and radioactive isotopes.
- Water geochemistry.
- Water–rock interaction.
- definition of geothermal potential.
- definition of recharge areas and residence times of water in shallow and deep aquifers.
- Coastal areas management
- Seawater intrusion
- Study of the correlation between seismic activity and water chemistry.
- Geochemical characterization of different environmental matrices: rocks, soils, water and plants.
- Geochemical characterization of mining sites and their environmental impact.
- Geochemical mapping and definition of geochemical background.
- Geochemical modeling of water-rock interaction processes.
- Study of the geochemical behavior of heavy metals in water.
- Study of the soil-plant system for the identification of suitable individuals for biomonitoring and bioremediation of heavy metal-contaminated areas
He also took part in scientific projects aimed to the characterization and treatment of pollutants in shallow systems and management of coastal environments affected by seawater intrusion. The main projects are: POR Project AsSE - “Arsenic separation from water by membrane processes”; PON Project SIGIEC “Integrated Coastal Erosion Management System"; PON Project AMICUS “Study of pollution reduction and protection in the coastal environment in selected areas of Calabria" and PNRR project 'Innovation Ecosystems', building 'Territorial R&D Leaders' (Directorial Decree n. 2021/3277) - project Tech4You - Technologies for climate change adaptation and quality of life improvement, n. ECS0000009.
Since 2011, he worked as a consultant of applied geochemistry and engineering geology in the field of major works acquiring expertise in geognostic and underground activities (e.g., tunneling). The main tasks include: Geologist for the Operation Management at the ex-ILVA steel plant during the work “Raw materials yard coverage”; Field Geologist during the construction phase of the railway line of the Cancello-Benevento section (Naples-Bari route); Consultant of applied geochemistry for the geochemical characterization of the water intercepted in natural tunnels (SA-RC).
He is a co-founder of the innovative Start-up and Spin-off E3 (Environment - Earth - Engineering).
Since March 2020 he has been a Researcher at the Department of Biology, Ecology and Earth Sciences (DiBEST - University of Calabria).
In January 2022 he obtained the National Scientific Qualification for Associate Professor in the Scientific Disciplinary Sector GEO/08, Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Petrology, Volcanology, Georisources and Applications, Competitive Sector: 04/A1.
