Professore di I fascia in Didattica e Pedagogia speciale del Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici dell’Università della Calabria. La sua attività di ricerca, basata sull'evidenza scientifica, è rivolta all’individuazione di proposte e modelli didattici che possano facilitare gli apprendimenti e l’inclusione di studenti con Bisogni Educativi Speciali (BES). Particolare attenzione è stata dedicata al problema pedagogico del bambino con autismo e alle sue difficoltà di linguaggio e di comunicazione che ne limitano il processo di sviluppo e di inclusione. Ha rivolto parte dei suoi studi all'analisi dei problemi inerenti alle “emergenze sociali”, in riferimento al ruolo svolto dalla formazione come strumento di riscatto e di prevenzione dei fenomeni di marginalità e di devianza minorile, oltre che ad aspetti relativi all’incontro fra culture diverse. Tra le ricerche più recenti, la messa a punto di strumenti di analisi, valutazione e intervento didattico sui Disturbi specifici dell'apprendimento nei bambini in età scolare e nei giovani adulti. È autrice di numerosi articoli scientifici e libri sui problemi pedagogico-didattici di bambini con Disturbi dello spettro autistico, Disturbi evolutivi e, più in generale, con BES. Collabora da diversi anni con l'Università di Burgos ad un progetto sui modelli europei di inclusione. Legata all’attività di ricerca, quella di formazione degli insegnanti che è stata curata anche attraverso la direzione dei Corsi abilitanti per la formazione degli insegnanti di sostegno (DM 249/10) e di master e corsi di perfezionamento su problematiche educative specifiche. Coordina il Corso di laurea magistrale quinquennale a ciclo unico in Scienze della formazione primaria, abilitante all'insegnamento nella scuola primaria e dell'infanzia.
