Paola Donato was born in Taurianova (Reggio Calabria, Italy). In 1997 she graduated in Geological Sciences at the University of Calabria (Italy), summa cum laude. In 2003 she obtained a PhD in Earth Sciences at the University of Bologna (Italy). Since 2006 she is Researcher of Volcanology and Geochemistry at the Department of Biology, Ecology and Earth Sciences of University of Calabria. During her PhD course her research focused on magmatological and volcanological aspects of volcanic Italian areas, and particularly Aeolian Islands. Later on, her research activity focused on different volcanic areas, in Italy and worldwide (Ustica, Mexico, Greece, Iran, Iceland, Ethiopia) and on tephrostratigraphy of Southern Italy. Moreover, she studies the volcanic component in fluvial and coastal sediments and the application of advanced microscopic techniques to different kinds of volcanic materials. During her research activity she has acquired advanced skills in the use and application of sophisticated analytical techniques. She has often cooperated with Italian and foreign researchers, and she is author of several papers published on international journals. Since 2003 she has carried on an intense didactic activity.

Paola Donato, PhD at Bologna University in 2003, is a Researcher in Volcanology and Geochemistry at the University of Calabria since April 2006.
Between 2004 and 2005 she had a research fellowship on the pre-eruptive conditions of magmas feeding the recent volcanism of Salina (Aeolian islands).
Between 1997 and 2007 she attended several specialization schools and courses in the field of Volcanology and Geochemistry. She attended several national and international congresses where she presented many contributions. She is Author of papers published on national and international journals. Her main lines of research concern the magmatism of Aeolian Islands and Aegean Arc, as well as the tephrostratigraphy of volcaniclastic deposits in Calabria. She has cooperated and she still cooperates with other Researchers of the same Department and of other national and international structures (Earth Science Department of Pisa and Catania, Athens University, Hannover Institut fur Mineralogie). Since 2001 she has been doing didactic assistance and teaching for the courses of Geological Science, Chemistry and Natural Hazards Management at the Calabria University.

DEGREE THESIS
Title: "Petrological and geochemical variations of Caenozoic volcanics between Abay River and Debre Zeit (Ethiopia)". The work consisted in sampling and analysing basaltic rocks of Ethiopian plateaux and characterising them from a petrological and geochemical point of view. In a second step the origin of basalts and their relationships with rhyolites of the same area have been investigated, modelling possible evolutionary processes of magmas.
PHD THESIS:
Title: “Aeolian Islands rhyolites: pre-eruptive conditions and mixing dynamics”. The work focused on the petrographical and geochemical characterization of recent volcanic products of Aeolian islands (Italy), and particularly on the rhyolites and associated mafic magmas. Particular attention was given to the mixing dynamics and to the determination of the pre- eruptive conditions of rhyolitic magmas. The research has been carried on in collaboration with the Earth Science Department of Calabria University, the Earth Science Department of Pisa University and Osservatorio Vesuviano in Neaples.
