Simona Panni is Assistant Professor in Molecular Biology at the Universtity of Calabria since 2006.

I have a Master Degree in Biological Sciences, 110/110 cum laude, University of Rome La Sapienza, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Biotechnology (PhD equivalent) 50/50 cum laude University of Rome, Tor Vergata. Between 1997 and 2004 I have won several scholarships including a two-years Grant from the European Institute of Oncology (IEO), a three-years Grant from the Italian Foundation for Cancer Research (FIRC) and a Telethon award for the study of the specificity of interactions mediated by protein domains. From 2002 to 2005 I was a Fellow in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory, Dept. of Biology, of the University Tor Vergata in Rome. In 2003 I won an ESF grant "Integrated Approaches for Functional Genomics" to work as a visiting researcher at the Charite Institute of the Humboldt-Universitat of Berlin. Since 2017 she has National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for Associate Professor in Molecular Biology.

My research activities focus on molecular interactions, ranging from protein recognition mechanisms to the representation and analysis of biological networks (PPI, RPI, and RRI). In particular, I have studied for several years the mechanisms that enable protein recognition mediated by binding domains. I have collaborated in the development of prediction systems for peptide-protein domain interactions and in the annotation of molecular interactions. I have analysed protein interaction networks, constructed and analysed ncRNA-protein and ncRNA-RNA interaction networks in the yeast S. cerevisiae, as well as microRNA-RNA networks in humans. Presently, I'm collaborating on a project focusing on regulatory networks and cross-talk between transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation mediated by non-coding RNAs. As part of these research activities, I have been a visiting scientist at the European Bioinformatics Institute (Cambridge, UK) on multiple occasions.

I am Graduated in Biology (110/110 cum laude), University of Rome “La Sapienza” and I have a Post-graduate Specialization in Biotechnology (50/50 cum laude), University of Rome “Tor Vergata” (PhD equivalent). Current Position since January 2006: Assistant Professor in Molecular Biology DiBEST Dept. of the University of Calabria. My research activity has been focused mainly on Interactions Networks. In particular I have analysed binding-domains-mediated networks, and contributed in elucidating the recognition specificity of polyproline- binding domains (Panni et al. 2015, Tonikian et al 2009, Panni et al. 2002), phosphopeptide- binding domains (Panni et al. 2008, Panni et al. 2011, Pallucca et al 2014) and others (Santonico et al. 2007, Santonico et al. 2010, Santonico et al.2015, Scalise et al. 2014 Sacco et al. 2014, etc) . In collaboration with the IntAct database (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/intact/) I have constructed and analysed the yeast ncRNAs network (Panni et al. 2017) and I am presently working on human microRNA network. Overall I have authored or co-authored 45 papers identified by Scopus (H index 21) and listed under the following links: https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=it&user=hOGzkN0AAAAJ https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=6506090490 https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7500-4028.
