RESEARCH ACTIVITY (PAST AND PRESENT)
The research activity of Prof. S. Imbrogno, evidenced by manuscripts published in international journals and by conference communications, has described important mechanisms of cardiac performance modulation in vertebrates. By using different paradigms of cardiac organization both of fish (temperate teleosts) and amphibians (frog) and of mammals (rat), the studies analyzed aspects of unity and diversity in signal transduction systems activated by autocrine-paracrine modulators (e.g., Angiotensin II, Chromogranin A and its derived peptides, GLP-2, Nesfatin-1, Phoenixin-14, Selenoprotein T), with particular reference to the Nitric Oxide transduction pathway. Studies carried out on teleost fish also analysed the morpho-functional circuits that contribute to organ plasticity in response to ontogenetic growth, as in the case of the morphometric and hemodynamic analysis of the heart of the growing eel. In the context of the adaptive comparative physiology, the research analyses, from cell to tissue and organ level, aspects of structural, ultrastructural and functional adaptive remodelling in response to humoral stress, as in the case of chronic exposure of teleost fish to Angiotensin II and environmental challenges (e.g., temperature and oxygen availability), and toxicants exposition.
Ongoing main research lines:
- Receptors and signal transduction pathways
- Cardiac morpho-functional plasticity in response to environmental stress
- The NOS/NO system in the transduction of physical and chemical stimuli
- Oxidative and nitrosative stress biomarkers and pro-inflammatory mediators
