RESEARCH TOPICS Research activities started with the study of the stratigraphy, sedimentology and diagenesis of Triassic and Miocenic carbonate depositional systems in North Calabria (Italy) (Perri et al 2002; Mastandrea et al., 2002; Muto e Perri, 2002; Mastandrea et al., 2003). In particular, have been carried out studies focused on the paleoecologic reconstruction of the Upper Triassic bioconstructor communities and on the role of microorganisms in the formation of carbonate minerals (Mastandrea et al., 2006; Russo et al., 2006). The latter topic resulted of great interest for the understanding of the origin and the environmental meaning of the microbialitic rocks (e.g. stromatolites, thrombolites, etc.), as well as for the comprehension of the processes of microbial biomineralization (Perri e Tucker, 2007; Perri e Spadafora, 2011; Perri et al. 2013c). Moreover, microbial carbonates, also associated with evaporites, were studied in several Italian (Perri et al., 2017, 2019a, 2019b; Borrelli et al., 2021) and international sites (Bahniuk et al., 2015, Brasil; Słowakiewicz et al., 2015 Poland; Gindre-Chanu et al 2016, Angola), where it has been evidenced that microbial carbonate can impact on the petrophysics properties of rocks (Słowakiewicz et al., 2015; Borrelli et al., 2019), and also serve as climate proxies (Bernasconi et al., 2015). Finally, the study of the bio-induced processes of formation and digenesis carbonate microbialites, was undertaken in modern carbonate systems on recent deposits under formation, both in marine and continental environments (Spadafora et al., 2010, Manzo et al., 2012; Perri et al., 2012a), through innovative protocols for the micro and nano-scale study of microbial biofilms structure and components (Perri et al., 2012b). Recently, this research has been focused on the sub-cellular components of the biofilms, such as viruses and bacterial vesicles that, seem have a key role in the processes of biomineralization of both carbonate and silicate minerals (Perri et al., 2018, 2022; Słowakiewicz et al., 2020). RESEARCH PROJECTS - Principal investigator for the Italian group in the project: "Viral proxies from modern carbonate environments".
