SUMMARY OF SCIENTIFIC CONTRIBUTIONS TO GEOLOGY
She works dominantly on:
Sand(stone): provenance; effects of weathering, lithology, transport and depositional environment on composition of sand; plutoniclastic sand and sandstone petrology; modern sands petrology; Palaeogeographic and Palaeotectonic reconstructions.
The main field areas are:
southern Apennines, southern Italy;
Spain and Portugal; southern and central California; Aeolian archipelago (Tyrrhenian sea); Cabo Verde archipelago
EDUCATION
Graduated in Geological Sciences, (academic year 1988-1989), University of Calabria, Cosenza, Italy. Dissertation theses titles: 1. Lithostratigraphic and compositional evolution of the Pollica Formation (Cilento Unit, southern Apennine) [96 pp]; and 2. Evidences of synsedimentary volcanism in the Pollica Formation (Cilento Unit, southern Apennine) [21 pp.];
1993 to 1998 – obtained a PhD degree in Sedimentology at the University of Bologna. PhD dissertation thesis title: Compositional relationships between source areas and modern to recent fluvial, coastal and marine sand in northern Calabria [2 vol., 278 pp.];
1998 to 1999 – took a Post-Doc Fellowship of the Italian National Council of Research at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Departamento de Petrologia y Geoquimica, Facultad de Ciencias Geologicas; Madrid (Spain);
2001 to 2004 – took a permanent position as Researcher of the Italian National Council of Research (C.N.R.), at Istituto di Ricerca per la Protezione Idrogeologica, Sezione di Cosenza, Via Cavour, 4-6, 7030 Roges di Rende (CS), Italy;
2005 – took a permanent position as Associate Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences, Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Calabria, Cosenza, Italy.
ACADEMIC APPOINTMENTS AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES:
Since April 2001 to December 2004 she has a permanent position as Researcher of the Italian National Council of Research (C.N.R.), Istituto di Ricerca per la Protezione Idrogeologica (I.R.P.I.), Sezione di Cosenza, Via Cavour, 4-6, 87030 Roges di Rende (CS), Italy;
In May 28 1998 she held a PhD Degree in Sedimentology at the University of Bologna and the University of Parma (Italy) (supervisors: prof. R. Valloni and prof. F. Ricci Lucchi);
From May 1998 to May 1999 she obtained an Advanced Fellowship Grant of the C.N.R. at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Departamento de Petrologia y Geoquimica, Facultad de Ciencias Geologicas; Madrid (Spain) (supervisor: prof. J. Arribas);
Since 2000 she taught as Professor "Introduction to Geomorphology” for Natural Sciences at the University of Calabria, Cosenza.
She has been supervisor of a PhD thesis on plutoniclastic sand petrology from 2001 to 2004.
Since 2001 to 2004 she was responsible of a Research Grant from the Italian National Council of Research (C.N.R.), Title: "Sedimentation, Denudation Processes and Uplift Rates in Neogene to Quaternary Orogenic Belts: Implications for Tectonic Setting and Regional Geology"
During 1997-2002 she was collaborator of a “Bilateral Project Italy (CNR) - Spain (CSIC-Consejo Superior Investigacion Cientifica) Grant”. Title project: The effects of source lithology, morphology, transport, deposition and sampling scale on the quantitative provenance of western Mediterranean sand (Iberian Cordillera and Calabrian Arc): implications for geographic distribution of actualistic petrofacies;
Since january 03 2005 she is Associate Professor of Sedimentary Petrology at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Calabria, 87036 Arcavacata di Rende (CS), Italy
HONORS and AWARDS - She was in receipt, during 1990-1991, of the "Tarquin C. Teale Award" of the Imperial College of London.
