RESEARCH ACTIVITY:
Gaetano Zimbardo is an expert in space plasma physics, and a recognized leader on the anomalous transport of energetic particles in the presence of magnetic turbulence. He has pioneered the study of superdiffusive transport of energetic particles in space plasmas, showing for the first time, both by numerical simulations and by data analysis, that transport parallel to the magnetic field can be superdiffusive. He also pioneered the study of magnetic turbulence in the Earth's magnetosphere, and proposed the presence of superdiffusion to explain observation of electron cosmic ray spectra at galaxy cluster merger shock. His research interest include:
Plasma physics, solar physics and astrophysics in general.
Space plasma physics, solar corona, solar wind, planetary magnetospheres, solar wind termination shock, heliosphere and interstellar medium.
The Earth's magnetosphere, magnetotail and magnetosheath.
Transport regimes in magnetized plasmas as a function of the different physical parameters.
Superdiffusive and subdiffusive transport regimes in a variety of different environments.
Chaos and nonlinear dynamics. Fractional transport equations.
Solar energetic particles acceleration and transport.
Space weather.
Acceleration of energetic particles in space plasmas.
Supernova remnant shocks and cosmic ray acceleration.
Shock formation in galaxy cluster mergers.
G. Zimbardo is the author of more than 140 papers on peer reviewed journals, and has an Hirsh factor h=28 (ISI WoS). He has given more than 40 invited talks, mostly on space plasma physics and anomalous transport, at international conferences.
G. Zimbardo serves as a referee for many primary scientific journals, including Physical Review Letters, Physical Review E, Astrophysical J., Monthly Notices of RAS, Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion, Physics of Plasmas, Astronomy and Astrohysics, J. Geophys. Res., Annales Geophysicae, etc. He serves as an expert evaluator for the National Science Foundation (NFS), the Italian MIUR, the European Union FP7 for the Cooperation “Space” projects, the European Union Horizon 2020 Space call, and others.
Recently, G. Zimbardo was the Team Leader of the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) team no. 297 on "Superdiffusive transport in space plasmas and its influence on energetic particle acceleration and propagation" (ISSI Call 2013), and the Main Scientific Organizer of the session D1.1 of the COSPAR 2018 scientific assembly, entitled "Anomalous Transport of Energetic Particles in the Heliosphere and the Galaxy", which was held in Pasadena (CA) (2018). Currently, he is involved in the CAESAR project and in the development of the HENON mission project (2022) of the Italian Space Agency, and participates in the ESA Solar Orbiter mission as Co-I of the METIS instrument.

G. Zimbardo has participated to several Italian (PRIN) research projects as participant, and has been the COORDINATOR (PI) of the following projects:
