Raffaele Persico is associate professor in Geophysics at the University of Calabria. He has been researcher at CNR and fellow professor in Probability and Statistics at the International Telematic University Uninettuno. He is permanent member of the Advisory Committee of the International Conference of the Ground Penetrating Radar (ICGPR) and is president of the Italian Association of the GPR (Associazione Italiana del Georadar). He was Chair of the 13th ICGPR, co-chair of the 4th International Workshop on Advanced Ground Penetrating Radar (IWAGPR), publication chair for the 15th Mediterranean Microwave Symposium and he is vice-chair for the 10th IWAGPR conference, to be held in Malta on July 2021. His main research activities are devoted to e.m. inverse problems, GPR data processing, GPR investigation of cultural heritage, GPR systems, TDR probes. The most important project to which he took part were AITECH (Applied Innovation technologies for Diagnosis and Conservation of Built Heritage), PROMETEOS (PROdotti, MEtodologie e TEcnologie Originali e Sostenibili per la diagnosi, la conservazione e la comunicazione dei beni culturali) and TDRpro project (Design of Time Domain Reflectometer, within the band TOFSA). Currently, he is Chair for the Italian side of the Bilateral Italy-Malta project. Raffaele Persico is Associate Editor of Geophysical Prospecting, Near Surface Geophysics, GPR Journal. He has also been Guest Editor of several special issues on international journals. The last one in temporal order is Advanced Ground Penetrating Radar Theory and Applications, Remote Sensing, edited by Pier Matteo Barone, Raffaele Persico and Salvatore Piro, currently in progress (July, 1st, 2020). Raffaele Persico has received the Christiaan Huygens Medal 2020 from the European Geoscience Union EGU (https://www.egu.eu/awards-medals/christiaan-huygens/). He has published 4 books, 2 patents and 86 papers on international journals and 160 conference papers.
Curriculum Vitae of Raffaele Persico Education • Degree in Electronic Engineering, summa cum laude, achieved in 1996 at the University of Naples Federico II, with a final dissertation in Optoelectronics entitled “Contactless Characterization of Semiconductors” (tutor prof. Antonello Cutolo). • Professional qualification achieved by the “esame di stato”, performed still at University Federico II in 1996. • Ph.D. degree in Electronic and Information Engineering achieved at Seconda Università degli Studi di Napoli (tutor prof. Rocco Pierri) in 1999, discussing a final dissertation entitled “Inversion algorithms for electromagnetic diagnostics: Applications to materials and buried objects". Further formation courses • Summer School in Boinville le Gaillard (France) on wavelets organised by the Ecole d’Ete d’Analyse Numerique in 1997. • Course “Campi elettromagnetici: Rischi e protezione” organised by the faculties of Engineering and Medicine and Surgery of the University of Napoli Federico II, with final examination, in 2001. Research Activities The research activity of Raffaele Persico has been developed in the field of the Inverse Scattering, Nondestructive Testing (NDT), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR). He has investigated both linear and nonlinear scattering models, theoretical and practical aspects related to the GPR prospecting and the GPR data processing, hardware of GPR systems (especially stepped frequency) and some aspects of TDR investigation. He has directed or taken part into many GPR measurement campaigns in Italy, Malta, Turkey and Perù, especially applied to cultural heritage, working among other things on the insertion of noninvasive imaging results within the 3D virtual reconstruction of historical monuments, so achieving virtual excavations in monuments of interest. He has also processed with advanced methods data gathered by other institutions in Italy, England, Scotland and Norway. The problems of the positioning of the instrument and of the rejection of the interferences in the framework of GPR prospecting have been afforded too. Valutazioni e prospettive”, organized by prof. Mario Signore and held in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Salento (Lecce, Italy) on June 13, 2005, on the occasion of the centenary of the theory of the special relativity. 2) He chaired the Workshop “Il Polo dei Laboratori IBAM a Lecce tra Ricerca e Innovazione: Servizi per le Istituzioni, le Imprese e il Terriotorio”, held in Lecce, Italia, in the Castle Carlo V on November 18-19 2013. 3) He was lecturer in the Interdisciplinary Seminar “Lo Scienziato che Mise in Contatto le Genti. Per il Centocinquantenario delle “equazioni” di J. C. Maxwell.”, organized by prof. Mario Signore and held in Lecce, Italy, on June 16, 2014. The Seminar was on the occasion of 150 years from the publication of the Maxwell’s equations. 4) He held the seminary “Onda su onda: un mare di frequenze e di applicazioni elettromagnetiche: Fenomenologie ondulatorie classiche” in the framework of the “Notte dei Ricercatori”, Lecce, Italy, September 27, 2019. 5) He chaired the seminary-debate “Survey ed indagini non invasive nei siti archeologici italiani: regolamenti e prospettive”, organised by Associazione Italiana del Georadar, Lecce, Italy, January 31st, 2020. Ph.D. Courses Raffaele Persico has been member of the Ph.D. committee (Collegio di Dottorato) of the International Telematic University Uninettuno UTIU. Raffaele Persico has been member of the Jury for the Defense of a Ph.D. Thesis at the Catholic University of Louvain, Louvain La Nueve, Belgium, on October 3rd 2018 and then members of the Jury for the final disseratation on November 28th 2018. Candidate Dr Jana Jezova, title of the thesis: Toward microwave sensing of tree trunks: instrumentation and radargram interpretation. Raffaele Persico has been co-tutor of a Ph.D. course of the XXIV cycle, entitled “La prospezione georadar nel campo dei Beni Culturali; messa a punto di nuove tecniche e tecnologie e comparazioni con sistemi tradizionali”, performer under a convention between the University of Bari Aldo Moro and the IBAM-CNR (tutor prof. Marcello Ciminale of the University of Bari, Ph.D. Student Loredana Matera). The Ph.D. course has been focused on the prototypal reconfigurable GPR devised by IBAM-CNR together with IDS Corporation and University of Florence in the framework of the project AITECH. The Ph.D. Thesis of the Ph.D. Student has been accepted for publication by Mistral Service-Books. Raffaele Persico has been official reviewer for the PhD theses of several PhD students, in particular on appointment received by the Sapienza University of Rome and of the University of Camerino. Degree theses Raffaele Persico has been tutor or co-tutor of several degree theses with the International Telematic University Uninettuno UTIU, the Second University of Napoli, the University Federico II of Napoli and the University of Salento.
