EXPERTISE
Prof. Pezzi was Research Fellow in the Prof. Rainey’s Lab (1995-1996), in Dallas and during that period, he worked on molecular mechanisms regulating the expression of enzymes involved in steroidogenesis, contributing to clarify the pathways involved in these processes. The collaboration with Prof. Rainey's Lab in this field is still ongoing and has yielded the publication of 12 full papers.
In 1999 he became assistant Professor of General Pathology at the University of Calabria and from that period on his main research interest has focused on molecular mechanisms regulating the expression of aromatase and the role of estrogen signaling in several normal and tumor tissues, such as testis, breast, ovary and adrenal. Some of these studies were carried on in collaboration with prestigious and international research labs (Prof. Evan Simpson and Dr. Colin Clyne - PHIMR, Monash Medical Center Clayton, Australia; Prof. Serge Carreau Dep. Biochimie-IRBA Université de Caen -France; Prof. Andò and Prof. Maggiolini from University of Calabria.
From 2001 to 2005 Prof. Pezzi carried out his research as a participant in two granted “PRIN projects” - PI Prof. S. Andò – University of Calabria: "Mechanisms of regulation of aromatase expression in testis and in testicular tumor cell lines " (PRIN 2001) and “Role of aromatase expression in testicular tumoro-genesis” (PRIN 2004).
Prof. Pezzi has publishing 14 full papers contributing to clarify the role of estrogen signaling in spermatogenesis and Leydig cell tumor. Moreover, he has contributed to characterize the activity of the novel membrane estrogen receptor, GPER, in several cellular types producing 8 full papers as co-author.
In particular, his studies have shown a direct involvement of ERs and GPER in mouse spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids in regulating proliferation and apoptosis along spermatogenesis.
From 2014 he started a collaboration with Prof. Lisanti’s lab, at the University of Manchester, UK, aimed to investigate the role of Estrogen receptors and Estrogen-related receptors in regulating mitochondrial metabolism and the metabolic shift from Glycolysis and OXPHOS in endocrine tumors such as adrenocortical cancer. In the last 8 years, on these topics Prof. Pezzi has been recipient of two grants funded by AIRC.
