Pietro Pantano is full professor of Physics and Mathematics at University of Calabria and is a member of the Ph.D Course in Psychology of Programming and Artificial Intelligence at University of Calabria.
Main fields of research are:
- non linear cases and theory of complexity
- Human-Computer Interaction
- communication and new technologies
He is co-author of more than 150 scientific papers and of various books. Several covers of the scientific journals Complexity and International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos have been dedicated to research papers published by Pietro Pantano.
Moreover, Prof. Pantano has been invited by Prof. Leon O. Chua, Editor in chief of the International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, to prepare a series of papers with the title "The Gallery of Chua's Attractors", published on six consecutive journal issues, since January 2007.
He collaborates in various national and international projects.
Prof. Pietro Panatno is member of several national and international scientific community and is director of the ESG (Evolutionary Systems Group).
He is in the scientific board of various conference.
Pietro Pantano is Full Professor of Physics and Mathematics at University of Calabria.
His main research interests concern several topics that are approached through an interdisciplinary approach. In particular, the main fields are as follows:
- Chaos Theory and Chua’s Oscillator
- Discrete and Continuous Dynamic Systems
- Biological models based on cellular automata
- Artificial life
- Generative and evolutionary music
- Industrial mathematics
- e-Learning systems
- Scientific communication
He published over 150 papers on these fields and he is co-author of several books. The (Journal of) Complexity and the International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos devoted the covers of some issues to his works, such as:

He is patentee of “Chaotic synthesizer” and “Chaos Explorer” software.
He is member of several national and international scientific communities, such as Italian Group of Physics-Mathematics of INDAM. Furthermore, he is member of scientific committees of national and international congresses and he was organizers of several congresses and workshops. He was responsible of the “Art and Science” exhibition in 2010 at University of Calabria for the European Project "Scienar". He was also the International coordinator of this project.
He is founder and current Dean of the Evolutionary Systems Group (ESG). The main activities of the group are available at the website: http://galileo.cincom.unical.it/esg/.
From 11/1/2011 is director of Doctoral School “Archimede” in Science, Communication and Technologies at University of Calabria.
He was the PhD coordinator for “Science and Engineering of Environment, Constructions and Energy” at University of Calabria since 2013 to 2016.
He is involved in national and European projects as responsible of local research unit or Principal Investigator .
In particular:
- He was responsible of local unit for COMSON (Coupled Multiscale Simulation and Optimisation in Nanoelectronics) project, funded by the European Marie Curie/ RTN (Research Training Network) action
- He was coordinator of the Italian Project Modelli Matematici ed Applicazioni alla Microelettronica, fundend by Italian Ministry of Scientific Research Programme “PROGRAMMI PER L'INCENTIVAZIONE DEL PROCESSO DI INTERNAZIONALIZZAZIONE DEL SISTEMA UNIVERSITARIO (D.M. 5 agosto 2004 n. 262 - ART. 23) - COLLABORAZIONI INTERUNIVERSITARIE INTERNAZIONALI” (2004-2006 period)
- He was International coordinator of SCIENAR (Scientific Scenarios and Art) project, funded by Europe for the Culture 2007-2013 programme.
He is currently involved in four projects under the ENIAC programme as responsible of local unit:
- MODERN (MOdeling and DEsign of Reliable, process variation-aware Nanoelectronic devices, circuits and systems)
- LAST-POWER (Large Area silicon carbide Substrates and heTeroepitaxial GaN for POWER device applications)
- ERG: ENERGY FOR A GREEN SOCIETY: FROM SUSTAINABLE HARVESTING TO SMART DISTRIBUTION. EQUIPMENTS, MATERIALS, DESIGN SOLUTIONS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS
- E2SG: Energy To Smart Grid, that starts on 4/1/2012.
He was one of the applicants of Materia project , for the National Operative Programme- Axis 1, and funded by Italian Ministry for Scientific Research. The aim of the project is to create a service centre for the study of materials for advanced technologies in an integrated system for linking together university research and the realization of prototypes for several applications.
He is also currently member of the Scientific and Technical Committee of the project as Responsible of the Modelling, Visualization and Scientific Simulation Centre.
