Brief descriptions of the research topics
---------------
The research topics refer mostly to the quantitative evaluation of the hydraulic consequences associated to flood events, caused by natural phenomenon or dam break/breach situations, in order to provide reliable methods for flood risk prediction and management. Specifically, the reference framework of the research is based on the Shallow Water Equations, using both 1D and 2D modelling, considering also the effects of the morphological changes associated to the evolution of the event in flood-prone areas.
The mathematical and numerical methods developed over the years have been used not only to propose advanced approaches for the flood hazard assessment in both urbanized and natural areas but also as an innovative contribution for the analysis of rainfall-runoff modeling at the basin scale. Regarding this latter aspect, new tools of analysis of the river drainage networks has been developed, providing new perspectives for the study of environmental fluxes, such as water, sediment and nutrient. Recently, attention has been focused on the quantification of the impacts induced by climate change on urban flooding.
Furthermore, attention has been focused also on the development of new approaches for flood risk communication based on 3-D representations of flood inundation, to engage people with flood hazards. Finally, some experimental works related to the evaluation of discharge coefficients for specific grated inlets, in the context of surface drainage of roads, has been carried out.
The main research topics are:
- Hydrodynamic-based rainfall-runoff modeling
- 1D Flood propagation in compound channel
- 2D Flood modeling in urban areas
- Highly unsteady flood modeling over erodible beds
- Propagation of dam break wave
- Generation of dam breach flood wave
- Flood risk communication
- Multifractal analysis of river networks
- Urban storm drainage and efficiency of grated inlets
- Impacts of climate change on urban flooding
