TEACHING
Lecturer at University of Calabria since 2005 in Introduction to Computer Science, Computer Science, Computer Graphics, and GPGPU Programming.
Current courses:
- GPGPU Programming (Master Degree in Computer Science)
- Computer Science for Chemists (Bachelor Degree in Chemistry)
- Introduction to Computer Science (Bachelor Degree in Biology)
He supervised more than 60 Degree and Master Degree Thesis in Computer Science.
RESEARCH
He is mainly interested in the following researches:
- High-Performance Computing (HPC) with a particular interest in structured grid stencil algorithms, optimization, and load balancing algorithm. He was the main contributor of the OpenCAL project and the XCAN general formalism for the co-evolutionary modeling of complex discrete dynamical systems.
- Modeling and Simulation of Complex Systems with Cellular Automata. He contributed to the definition of diverse numerical models like SCIDDICA (for simulating landslide/debris-flow) simulator, SCIARA (for simulating lava-flow simulator), Scavatu (for simulating soil erosion simulator), besides others. The above-mentioned models were employed in diverse practical applications and research projects.
- General Purpose Optimization with Parallel Genetic Algorithm. He adopted the Genetic Algorithms as general-purpose optimization algorithms since his Ph.D. thesis for calibrating the parameters of the SCIDDICA S4b debris-flow simulator over the 1998 Sarno (Italy) debris flows. Further applications regarded SCIARA-fv2 in the context of a FIRB national research project.
He was supervisor of 5 Ph.D. Thesis and a post-doctoral biennial research position at the University of Calabria
TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
He co-founded the University of Calabria startup Grosafer in December 2010, serving as its chief executive officer (CEO) until July 2012.
AWARDS
- Supervisor of the best Ph.D. Thesis entitled "Parallel and evolutionary applications to cellular automata models for mitigation of lava flow invasions" by Giuseppe Filippone, at the Italian Modeling and Simulation Association (MIMOS) 2013 Ph.D. Thesis competition in Computer Science.
- Third place at the 2010 edition of the Start Cup Calabria business competition with the Geosafer project, which later became a startup of the University of Calabria. He was the chief executive officer (CEO) in the period December 2010 - July 2012.
