MAIN RESEARCH FIELDS
A) ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES, REPORTING AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS ANALYSIS
B) SMES, INDUSTRIAL DISTRICTS, AND INNOVATIVE FORMS OF FINANCING
C) BUSINESS NETWORKS AND RISK EVALUATION
a) ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES, REPORTING AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS ANALYSIS
Within this research area, the studies focused on the impact of Basel 2 on the assessment of company’s risk and on the opportunities of new forms of financing envisaged by the company law reform.
As part of the Research project of significant National interest (PRIN 2003), it have been examined the reporting modalities in the financial statements and the evaluation criteria of the intangibile asset. With regard to human resources, on the one hand, the strategic contribution of human resources to business value creation was highlighted and, on the other hand, the possible methods of their evaluation and representation in the financial statements were identified in light of the national and international accounting principles , as well as the criteria and informational tools, accounting and extra-accounting, with which to measure the value of the company’s “human capital”.
b) SMES, INDUSTRIAL DISTRICTS, AND INNOVATIVE FORMS OF FINANCING
Within this research area it have been analyzed the features and criticalities, in particular of financial nature, of district companies by identifying some strategies to overcome them. The studies on districts have benefited from the experience gained as Coordinator of the Observatory of Italian Districts, that is the official database of the italian districts.
c) BUSINESS NETWORKS AND RISK EVALUATION
Within this research area it have been analyzed the different forms of business combination. In particular, it have been examined advantages, risks and opportunities of using strategic outsourcing and business networks. Compared to the latter, the planning system and the advantages in terms of mitigation of operational risk, of opportunities for financing and improvement of the bank-company relationship have been deepened also in light of Basel 2.
The business networks, thanks to the combination of some factors (economies of scale and learning and process innovation) it involves an overall reduction in operating costs compared to those incurred in the event that the production was carried out entirely within each individual company. From this point of view, the cost structure is more flexible, with positive effects on operating risk and, consequently, on the value of companies that make up the network. These characteristics ensure less burdensome conditions for bank loans, a more important advantage if we take into account that SMEs in Italy record on the side of the sources of financing an imbalance represented by the greater incidence of bank debt on equity. In this regard, in the case in which banks had to evaluate the relationship system, for companies participating in a network there would be a lower degree of risk and correspondingly less costly financing conditions could be set up compared to those applied to loan requests presented by independent companies. It has been verified that business networks achieve above-average profitability and present lower solvency risks when the relationships are long-lasting and formalized, characterized by planning and control system, with companies consolidated on the market and/or under development, located in districts with a vocation to internationalization and a strong propensity for innovation. It is evident, therefore, that business networks with these characteristics deserve higher ratings and consequently better access to credit.
He is author and co-author of several articles and books on above mentioned research areas and he attends as a speaker at many international and national conferences.
