PhD Day Unical, una giornata di ricerche ed esperienze a confronto per le dottorande e i dottorandi dell’ateneo
Una giornata densa di emozioni, tra condivisioni di conoscenze, presentazioni di studi, ricerche e risultati, racconti di storie e sviluppi del percorso dottorale dell’ateneo e festeggiamenti, che ha registrato oltre mille partecipazioni.
È il PhD Day, l’iniziativa con la quale l’Università della Calabria ha celebrato l’importante percorso di studi e ricerca delle iscritte e degli iscritti ai corsi di dottorato dell’Università della Calabria.
All’evento, svoltosi il 30 maggio scorso, ha partecipato l’intera comunità accademica, nonché il territorio rappresentato da personalità delle istituzioni, del mondo imprenditoriale, della cultura e della società
In un’Aula Magna gremita, a dare il via alla prima edizione del PhD Day Unical è stato il Magnifico Rettore Nicola Leone. Poi gli interventi di Francesco Valentini, senatore accademico e coordinatore della commissione scientifica HRS4R, che ha parlato di “HR Excellence in Research”, il riconoscimento conferito dalla Commissione Europea all’Unical per aver adeguato la propria condotta ai principi della Carta europea e del Codice di condotta per il reclutamento dei ricercatori e delle ricercatrici; di Maria Carmela Cerra, delegata del Rettore per i dottorati di ricerca, che ha raccontato la storia del dottorato Unical che vanta 40 anni di corsi dottorali; di Rosa Fioravante, segretaria nazionale dell’Associazione Dottorandi e Dottori di Ricerca in Italia (ADI) che ha illustrato il ruolo strategico del dottorato di ricerca per lo sviluppo del Paese; di Fortunato Amarelli, presidente di Confindustria Cosenza e presidente di Digital Innovation Hub Calabria, che ha affrontato il tema della fondamentale sinergia tra Università e Imprese per la realizzazione di percorsi dottorali, quelli innovativi, rispondenti alle esigenze del mondo produttivo.
La parola poi agli ospiti della manifestazione: la fisica e climatologa Serena Giacomin, presidente dell’Italian Climate Network che ha parlato del rapporto tra scienza e divulgazione, e il Maestro dei maestri pasticcieri Iginio Massari che ha realizzato, in esclusiva per l’evento, la torta dedicata al percorso dottorale dell’Unical e battezzata Uni-Kalaglyca (dal greco buona e dolce; nome definito dagli studiosi del Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici dell’ateneo).
Per gli ospiti un premio artistico realizzato e consegnato dal Maestro orafo calabrese Gerardo Sacco.
La seconda parte della giornata è stata dedicata alla PhD Competition fra le iscritte e gli iscritti ai corsi di dottorato dell’Unical. Due le sezioni: Poster Competition che è consistita nell’esposizione di oltre 100 poster realizzati dalle dottorande e dai dottorandi sul loro tema di ricerca e Pitch Competition che ha contato dieci presentazioni, di quattro minuti, di un argomento di ricerca. In entrambi i casi gli elementi premianti sono stati rappresentati dalla maniera divulgativa e dalla capacità di appassionare il pubblico dimostrate dalle dottorande e dai dottorandi in gara.
Hanno vinto la Poster Competition, per l’Area Tecnico-Scientifica Simone Cuconato, dottorando in ICT, e per l’Area Socio Economica e Umanistica Lorena Montesano, dottoranda in Studi Umanistici. La vincitrice della Pitch Competition, invece, è Martina Luzzi, dottoranda in Matematica e Informatica. Per tutti i vincitori un premio in denaro di mille euro.
Nell’ambito del PhD Day, inoltre, si è svolta la cerimonia di consegna delle pergamene alle dottoresse e ai dottori di ricerca del 35esimo ciclo.
La manifestazione è stata organizzata dall’Area Ricerca, Innovazione e Impatto Sociale dell’Università della Calabria.
Il punto di vista della delegata del Rettore per i dottorati di ricerca sull’intensa giornata del PhD Day
Prof.ssa Maria Carmela Cerra, come descriverebbe la prima edizione della giornata con cui l’ateneo ha inteso celebrare chi frequenta i corsi di dottorato Unical? Cosa l’ha colpita maggiormente?
La prima edizione del PhD Day è stata straordinaria! Ben al di là delle aspettative. Poter riunire per la prima volta i dottorandi e le dottorande del nostro ateneo in una giornata interamente dedicata a loro è la realizzazione di un progetto lungamente pensato e fortemente voluto. La spinta definitiva alla sua concretizzazione è venuta da ciò che è emerso nelle risposte che dottorandi e dottorande hanno dato al questionario legato alla gap analysis di HRS4R. È apparso palese il desiderio di incontrarsi, conoscersi, scambiare opinioni, entusiasmi e interessi. In altre parole, il desiderio di ritrovarsi come comunità. E con il PhD Day credo che abbiamo colto nel segno. Lo conferma la partecipazione ricca, gioiosa e, direi contagiosa, di tantissimi studenti e studentesse dei nostri corsi di dottorato, dei loro tutor e di tanti colleghi e colleghe. Anche l’accoglienza che hanno riservato ai nostri ospiti, circondati da interesse ed entusiasmo. Di alto valore anche la qualità scientifica dei poster e dei pitch presentati, evidenza delle ottime ricerche che si svolgono nel nostro ateneo.
Ha dichiarato che la manifestazione del 30 maggio è solo la prima di tante altre edizioni che seguiranno. Cosa conserverà in termini di organizzazione e di format dell’evento e cosa inserirà di nuovo? Ci ha già pensato?
Speriamo davvero che il PhD Day diventi una tradizione per il nostro Ateneo. Richiede impegno e costanza, ma credo che ne valga la pena. È nostra intenzione riproporlo nel prossimo anno e per questo ci metteremo presto al lavoro. Ancora una volta sarà fondamentale il contributo anche in termini di idee che ci daranno dottorandi e dottorande. Tutto è ancora in itinere. Per adesso pensiamo di conservare poster e pitch competition e la presenza di ospiti. Ciò che sarà però lo vedremo a valle del lavoro che faremo. E sono certa che, anche questa volta, sarà un lavoro faticoso ma stimolante per tutti.
Nel frattempo, cosa le resta del primo PhD Day e cosa, pensa, rimanga all’Unical?
Restano senz’altro l’entusiasmo e l’energia contagiosa che ci hanno trasmesso dottorandi e dottorande. I sorrisi, la partecipazione fino all’ultimo, la disponibilità anche a coinvolgersi nell’organizzazione, la voglia di comunicare la bellezza delle proprie ricerche e di lasciarsi contaminare da altre discipline per esplorare percorsi nuovi. Restano le immagini dei gruppi di giovani con le magliette bianche e rosse che, chiuse le porte dell’Aula Magna, erano ancora lì, e sembravano non voler far finire la giornata. All’Unical resta la possibilità preziosa di proseguire un percorso che porti al consolidamento della nostra comunità di scienziati e ricercatori. Abbiamo sperimentato in questi anni, grazie al forte impulso della Governance di Ateneo, che o si va avanti insieme o non si va avanti. E questo “andare avanti insieme” non può che partire proprio dai giovani e dalle giovani che affidano a noi i loro primi passi nel mondo della ricerca universitaria. In questo, il PhD Day rappresenta un’opportunità da non perdere.

L'organizzazione del PhD Day con cadenza annuale è una specifica azione dell'Action Plan HRS4R dell'Unical, approvato dalla Commissione europea. Lo scopo principale del PhD Day 2023 è stato quello di celebrare il Dottorato di Ricerca all'interno del nostro ateneo e di accrescere in ognuno il senso di appartenenza all'istituzione. Per la prima volta nella storia dell'Unical, i dottorandi e le dottorande di tutti i Corsi di Dottorato si sono riuniti per celebrare se stessi, per guardarsi in faccia e condividere le esperienze, i timori, le incertezze e i successi di chi si appresta a compiere i primi passi nel campo della ricerca scientifica. In un'atmosfera festosa e rilassata, si è parlato dei principi della Carta Europea, di diritti di giovani ricercatori e ricercatrici, di qualità delle procedure di reclutamento, di qualità dell'ambiente di lavoro, di attività di ricerca interdisciplinare e multidisciplinare, al fine ultimo di favorire lo scambio di idee e contaminazione culturale tra i/le giovanissimi/e, e promuovere il respiro internazionale della ricerca in Unical.

PhD Day Unical, a day of research and sharing of experiences for the PhD students of the university
A day filled with emotions, featuring the sharing of knowledge, study presentations, research and results, stories of academic journeys, and celebrations, with over a thousand participants.
It's the PhD Day, the initiative through which the University of Calabria celebrated the significant academic and research journey of the enrolled PhD students at the University of Calabria. The event, held on May 30th last, was attended by the entire academic community, as well as representatives from institutions, the business world, culture, and society from the region.
In a packed Aula Magna, the inaugural edition of the PhD Day Unical was opened by the Rector Nicola Leone. This was followed by speeches from Francesco Valentini, academic senator and coordinator of the scientific committee HRS4R, who talked about 'HR Excellence in Research,' the recognition conferred by the European Commission to Unical for aligning its conduct with the principles of the European Charter and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers; Maria Carmela Cerra, the delegate of the Rector for doctoral programs, who shared the history of Unical's doctoral program, which boasts 40 years of doctoral courses; Rosa Fioravante, national secretary of the Association of Doctoral Candidates and Doctors in Italy (ADI), who illustrated the strategic role of doctoral research for the country's development; Fortunato Amarelli, president of Confindustria Cosenza and president of Digital Innovation Hub Calabria, who addressed the essential synergy between universities and businesses for the implementation of doctoral programs, particularly innovative ones that meet the needs of the productive world.
Then the guests of the event took the stage: physicist and climatologist Serena Giacomin, president of the Italian Climate Network, who spoke about the relationship between science and communication, and the Master of pastry chefs, Iginio Massari, who exclusively created the cake dedicated to Unical's doctoral journey, named Uni-Kalaglyca (from the Greek words for 'good' and 'sweet,' a name defined by scholars from the Department of Humanities Studies at Unical)
The guests were gifted with an artistic creation by the Calabrian goldsmith Master, Gerardo Sacco.
The second part of the day was dedicated to the PhD Competition among the enrolled PhD students at Unical. It consisted of two sections: the Poster Competition, where over 100 posters were displayed by students doctoral candidates showcasing their research topics, and the Pitch Competition, which featured ten presentations lasting four minutes each, focusing on different research topics. In both cases, the strengths were the ability to communicate and engage the audience, shown by the competing PhD students.
The winners of the Poster Competition were Simone Cuconato, a PhD student in ICT for the Technical-Scientific Area, and Lorena Montesano, a PhD student in Humanities and Social Sciences for the Socio-Economic and Humanistic Area. As for the Pitch Competition, Martina Luzzi, a PhD student in Mathematics and Computer Science, emerged as the winner. Each of the winners received a cash prize of one thousand euros.
As part of the PhD Day, the ceremony for awarding diplomas to the female and male researchers of the 35th cycle was also held.
The event was organized by the Research, Innovation, and Social Impact Area of the University of Calabria.
The point of view of the Rector's delegate for research doctorates on the intense PhD Day
Professor Maria Carmela Cerra, how would you describe the first edition of the event through which the university intended to celebrate those attending the Unical doctoral programs? What struck you the most?
The first edition of the PhD Day was extraordinary beyond all wildest expectations. Bringing together, for the first time, the PhD students of our university in a day entirely dedicated to them is the realization of a long-cherished and strongly desired project. The final impetus for its implementation came from what emerged in the responses given by the PhD students to the questionnaire related to the HRS4R gap analysis. The desire to meet, get to know each other, exchange opinions, enthusiasms, and interests was evident. In other words, the desire to come together as a community. And with the PhD Day, I believe we hit the mark. This is confirmed by the rich, joyful, and, I would say, contagious participation of numerous male and female students from our doctoral programs, their mentors, and many colleagues. They welcomed our guests with genuine interest and enthusiasm. The scientific quality of the posters and pitches presented was also of high value, reflecting the excellent research conducted at our university.
You declared that the event on May 30th is just the first of many other editions that will follow. What aspects of the event's organization and format will you keep, and what will you introduce as new elements? Has you already thought about it?
We truly hope that the PhD Day will become a tradition for our University. It requires commitment and perseverance, but I believe it's worth it. Our intention is to repropose the event the next year, and for that, we will start working soon. Once again, the input from the PhD students, even in terms of ideas, will be crucial. Everything is in progress. For now, we plan to keep the poster and pitch competitions and the presence of guests. However, the final decisions will depend on the work we do. I am certain that, once again, it will be a challenging but stimulating endeavor for everyone involved.
In the meantime, what remains with you from the first PhD Day, and what do you think will stay with Unical?
The enthusiasm and contagious energy transmitted by the PhD students undoubtedly remain. The smiles, the participation until the very end, their willingness to get involved in the organization, the eagerness to communicate the beauty of their research and to be open to cross-disciplinary exploration for new paths – these all stay with us. The images of groups of PhD students with white and red t-shirts, lingering even after the doors of the Aula Magna were closed, seemingly reluctant to let the day end, linger in our memories. At Unical, the precious opportunity to continue on a path that leads to the consolidation of our community of scientists and researchers remains. Over the years, thanks to the strong drive of the University's Governance, we have experienced that either we move forward together, or we don't move forward at all. And this 'moving forward together' can only start with the young students who entrust their first steps in the world of university research to us. In this aspect, the PhD Day represents an opportunity not to be missed.

"The organization of the annual PhD Day is a specific action of Unical's HRS4R (Human Resources Strategy for Researchers) Action Plan, approved by the European Commission. The main purpose of the PhD Day 2023 was to celebrate the Doctoral programs within our university and to foster a sense of belonging to the institution in each participant. For the first time in the history of Unical, PhD students from all Doctoral programs came together to celebrate themselves, to meet face-to-face, and share their experiences, fears, uncertainties, and successes as they prepare to take their first steps in the field of scientific research.
In a festive and relaxed atmosphere, discussions focused on the principles of the European Charter, the rights of young researchers, the quality of recruitment procedures, the quality of the working environment, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research activities, all aimed at fostering the exchange of ideas and cultural cross-pollination among the young participants and promoting the international dimension of research at Unical. These are key elements of the strategic policy of the University's Governance, of which our distinctive landmark in the world, the Ponte Bucci, becomes an emblem and symbol.
The entire HRS4R strategy of Unical has been designed to achieve the ambitious goal of projecting our university onto increasingly prestigious international stages, with a strong focus on the young talents that we ourselves can nurture and flourish. PhD students at Unical are at the heart of the research development and promotion project, and therefore, they are at the core of the HRS4R strategy.
